Finding My Voice – Synopsis

Finding My Voice:

(Living My True Life)

Written and performed by Doreen Firestone

with Ann Zalkind at the piano

What do you do when you find yourself

in the middle

of Middle Age

and you still haven’t “Made It”?

And you realize the plan of success

you mapped out

with your ten-year-old mind

can’t play itself out in real time?

Yeah, when you’re terrified

of speaking your truth,

yet even more terrified

of dying lying,

and never having lived your truth?

Well, you write an autobiographical, theatrical, musical journey

of your quest

to your true greatness,

and you hope your plunge into vulnerability

inspires others to join

in this Great Adventure.

Come, climb aboard this roller coaster ride of self-discovery

to live your true life!

In the one-woman musical comedy, CAN’T A GIRL GET A BREAK, Sage Advice, the world-famous relationship expert, has all the answers to the age old question: How to ‘find true love and drop kick the rest!’  But how about her own love life?

Audiences are sure to enjoy the uplifting music and larger than life character of Sage Advice, created and brought to life by Broadway and opera singing actress Doreen Firestone.  This is a 60-70 minute program with musical selections by various composers such as Stephen Sondheim and Leonard Bernstein.

“The Oceanside patrons enjoyed this uplifting and comedic show.  Doreen interacted with the audience and made them feel like they were part of the action.  She is a talented musician and performer, as is her pianist, Ann Zalkind.  It was wonderful to work with both of them.  I would highly recommend Doreen Firestone.  If her performance at the Oceanside Library is any indication of how she’d perform in the future, Doreen’s show will be a wonderful addition to your program!

DOREEN FIRESTONE is an accomplished singer, actress, composer and playwright, having performed regionally at the Paper Mill Playhouse, as well as in a national tour of THE SOUND OF MUSIC and on cruise ships, in summer stock productions and in cabaret performances on Restaurant Row in NYC.   Operatically, she has brought “Carmen” to life as the title character and she has graced the recital stage.

As President of Firestone Productions LLC, Doreen is active as not only actress and singer, but creates her own theatrical pieces.  As playwright and composer, Doreen has created THE PRODIGAL DAUGHTER, a dramatic musical experience of God’s loving mercy, and has produced it both off-Broadway and on its ongoing tour through out the greater New York area.  Recently she has debuted her comedic tour de force, CAN’T A GIRL GET A BREAK, bringing to life the lead character, Sage Advice, and a presentation about St Katharine Drexel’s legacy of ministering to the Black and Native American Races.  When Doreen Firestone says she has been busy this last year playing a Saint, a Sinner and a Sage, she means it!

ANN ZALKIND has performed on the “distinguished artist” series at the 92nd Street Kaufman Auditorium.  She has also appeared on stage at Alice Tully Hall, Carnegie Hall and with members of the New York Philharmonic.  She has performed with the Horace Mann Chamber Concert Choir.  The New York Times has acclaimed “her genuine poetic gift, knowledge of musical styles, clarity, precision , thoughtful deliberation and temperament.”  Ann is the author of What Matters Most, A Memoir, to be published by Palmetto Publishing Group.
